Built by one person, in Athens.

Hi, I’m Triantafyllos (Rose) Samaras. I build small, opinionated software out of Athens, and I have been a DJ since I was eleven. DJPI is where those two halves of me finally meet. I wanted to play off a Raspberry Pi without dragging a laptop around, so I built it. I run development and support myself, so when you email DJPI, you’re talking to me, not a queue.

Athens, GreeceSay hi

From two Winamp windows to two Stanton turntables to a Raspberry Pi.

I started mixing as a kid in 1997, beatmatching two Winamp windows before I had any business doing it. Then came Atomix, a MiniDisc, and eventually a real setup: two Stanton turntables, a Behringer mixer and an iRiver MP3 CD player with pitch control. By seventeen I was playing professionally in Athens, and the booths kept getting bigger.

  1. 1997

    Eleven years old, first mixes

Beatmatching in Winamp with two instances running at once, then Atomix, the software that would later become Virtual DJ.

  2. Soon after

    Hardware, the hard way

A MiniDisc, then two Stanton turntables, a Behringer mixer, the MiniDisc again and an iRiver MP3 CD player with pitch control.

  3. At 17

    Going professional

Playing for money across various Athens underground clubs.

  4. 2004

    Nike, Athens Olympics

The DJ for Nike, the clothing brand, during the Athens Olympic Games.

  5. 2 seasons

    Motel Club light show

Running the light show at Athens Motel Club for two years.

  6. 2006 to 2008

    Mamacas resident

Warm-up resident for the Christosz night at Mamacas, one of the best clubs in Greece, opening for Rocco Rodamaal, Osunlade, Franck Roger, Joe Claussell, Alex Finkin, The Timewriter, Hiroshi Watanabe, Solomun, Black Coffee, CJ Jeff, Argy, DJ Gregory and many more.

  7. After that

    Φιλάκια (“kisses”)

Parties with some of the biggest names, thrown inside my food company’s warehouse. A DDJ-400 turned up as a birthday gift from friends, paired with Traktor and Rekordbox.

  8. Last 2 years

    DJPI

A spare Raspberry Pi 3 left over from an old proxy project became the seed. After countless iterations it grew into DJPI.

I just wanted to play, without the laptop.

For years I wanted an autonomous console, one that simply turns on with nothing to plug a laptop into. The Raspberry Pi 3 sitting on my desk became the experiment, and after a long string of iterations it turned into something I actually use every time I play.

Today DJPI runs on the Pi 3, 4 and 5 in two editions:

  • Mini is a stripped-down Linux image with Mixxx and the Pioneer skin, tuned for fast load times and low memory use.
  • Full turns the Pi into a media center. Share your library over the network from Apple, Linux and Windows, install apps like Nicotine, Transmission, OpenCLAW and Kodi, manage everything from the local portal at djpi.local, and use an old tablet or phone over VNC as the screen for your booth.

I built it to cover my own needs. Now I am sharing it with everyone: the most affordable, out-of-the-box DJ software, paired with 3D models matched to your Pi and your screen.

None of them are DJPI.

That’s the point. Each one solves a problem I kept running into, and each one ships from the same small studio in Athens.
